The first two games have ended, and I went one for two. Kansas held off a very game Southern Illinois squad that held Kansas to right around 60 (like I said they needed to). Then, Memphis got some questionable calls in their favor to outlast Texas A&M 65-64. Now for some thoughts:
* Julian Wright's dunk that clearly came after the shot-clock had expired came up big at the end of the game, as most people watching the game probably thought. Too bad that situation isn't reviewable (when everything else seems to be).
* Bill Self's wife bothers me. Not much to look at, and seems to really overreact and celebrate whenever Kansas does something well. Really annoying.
* Kansas's poor foul shooting will cost them later in the tournament. They shoot 65% as a team and missed several key FT's down the stretch (most importantly Wright missing both with 2.2 to go and leaving the door open).
* I really miss Gus Johnson this round. He would have made both games tonight seem like life and death. Meanwhile, James Brown sounds like he's calling bingo at a nursing home.
* Chris Douglas-Roberts playing was a huge factor in the game...Memphis could not have won this game without him. On a side note, he might be the only player in college basketball with three first names.
* A&M gave up four offensive rebounds in the last twenty seconds...unacceptable if you want to win the game. However, had the Fourth made his bunnie twenty seconds earlier, it wouldn't have mattered.
* In the end, I went 1 for 2 in the early games, and I lost a Final Four team with A&M. Thanks Acie.
Stay tuned for picks tomorrow and comments on late games.
